"Harbor and Home contains rich documentation of the best of 18th and 19th century clocks, chests, chairs, desks, and dressing tables. Readers are treated to rarely seen pieces from outstanding private and public collections."-- "Collectors Journal and Country Pleasures Magazine""For too long the work of the cabinetmakers of southeastern Massachusetts sat in the shadows, labeled "good" or "better" against Boston and Newport "bests." With this book, the reassessment of furniture long attributed to Boston and Newport can begin, grounded in solid scholarship, as we rediscover the work of craftsmen who "crafted careers as solid and useful as the furniture they fashioned."-- "Winterthur Portfolio""Harbor & Home is an important and accomplished work in merging the decorative arts of Massachusetts' coast to the local histories that created them. . . . While Jobe's 1984 publication New England Furniture: The Colonial Era gives one of the finest overviews and looks at the entire region, Harbor & Home carries this scholarship to a new level. . . . Harbor &Home will easily appeal to the decorative art collector of Americana, but is also a certain must for the professional or scholar in both New England and Americana decorative arts. Brock Jobe's passion for the subject and region, along with his scholarship distilled from years of work, are on full display in Harbor & Home."-- "Historical Journal of Massachusetts"Using furniture and other artifacts, diaries, and account books, the study introduces us to the men who made their living in seafaring commerce and to the craftsmen of the region. . . . Harbor and Home . . . focuses the attention . . . on the heritage of southeastern Massachusetts.-- "Maine Antique Digest"

Review
“Wallace Nutting lamented in 1928 that southeastern Massachusetts had been so picked over by dealers and collectors that it had become the “least likely of any region to yield old furniture.” However, this new study by Brock Jobe, Gary R. Sullivan and Jack O'brien, assisted by a cadre of other authors, proves that Nutting was mistaken. Harbor & Home provides a rich contextual examination of the cabinetmaking and clockmaking crafts in this area from 1710 to 1850, linking the area’s furniture to Boston and Newport while defining its own distinctive characteristics. It will surely become a standard text in the literature on regional styles in early American furniture.” (Gerald W.R. Ward, The Katharine Lane Weems Senior Curator of Decorative Arts and Sculpture, Art of the Americas, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston)“Brock Jobe’s Harbor & Home proves that understanding the physical context of regional history is critical to understanding its material culture. The book brings antique photographs, ledger book analysis and other salty tales about seafaring commerce, craftsmanship, and connoisseurship to unfurling new knowledge about furniture-making in a region of New England that has escaped deep primary research until now. From acquisition to auction, the early furniture found in Harbor & Home identifies the work of new shop traditions and refines the template for regional study of American craftsmanship by using many artifacts in private collections. As value added, Gary R. Sullivan’s writing on timekeeping south of Boston augments our overall understanding of clockmaking in Federal era Massachusetts.” (Philip Zea, President, Historic Deerfield, Inc)

I found this book after searching for the furniture maker of a family heirloom on Google. The results led to some scanned pages from this book that had the information I was looking for. Based on what I read online, I knew I wanted to have the physical book on hand for reference and to learn a little bit more about furniture that came out of that part of Massachusetts in the same era. There weren't a lot of copies of this book printed, and it doesn't show up on the used market very often, so I'm glad to have finally found a print edition I can keep on my bookshelf!
If you have more than a passing fancy for Antiques, maybe restore furniture, build some furniture and what to know more about the origins of many wonderful Early American pieces of furniture this book is a fantastic resource. If you are studying about Early American furniture or Conservation of Antiques the documented resources of woodworkers, cabinetmakers, clock makers and history of this area is exhaustive. The plates are well done, well written and beautiful. Overall the quality of the binding, paper, printing and photos make this worth the $$ and a permanent part of any library. Completely fulfilled my expectations and more.
This book has been on my Christmas list for three years. My wife finally succumbed to my suggestions. This fine volume was well worth the wait. Harbor and Home will be pulled frequently from the shelves of my library, not only as a research tool, but as a book in which to spend many enjoyable hours examining the material culture of this area of New England.
This book represents a significant body of research with respect to eighteenth/nineteenth century American furniture. It is superbly produced both for its photography and written content and contains a meticulously chosen collection of the finest examples of early American craftsmanship. This is a "must have," for those who appreciate history, fine American antiquities, and desire an incomparable addition to one's reference library.
very great and fast shipping A++++ Thank you so much!!
Great detailed book of wonderful regional pieces.
This book combines a wonderful look at the life of people in Cape Cod and Southern Massachusetts with a scholarly look at the furniture created by the local craftsman of the day.
A very well researched book on a topic that has not received much attention. It was interesting to read how furniture style from larger markets such as Boston and Newport affected other areas. The section on the influence of the John Bailey family of Hanover in clockmaking shows how they trained one third of the area clockmakers of that period. I would hope that this book will spark an interest in further research of local furniture makers of the period.
