About the Author
Stanley States, PhD, is a first-generation American whose father and grandparents came to Pittsburgh from Poland in the early 1900s. He has maintained his Polish heritage by attending summer programs at nearby Polish Alliance College as a teenager, dancing in Polish and Lithuanian folk groups, singing in a Polish church choir, belonging to Polish cultural organizations, and visiting his family in Poland. A true Pittsburgher, States had a 36-year career working as a chemist/microbiologist for the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority.

Polish Pittsburgh brought back so many fond memories. My Father's family is originally from Lawrenceville and Polish Hill. The Polish Falcons,The Polish War Vets, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, St. John the Baptist Church( which included many Polish, Irish, and German families),St. Stanislaus Church, and Holy Family Church were all places of importance to us. The community of people who resided in the aforementioned neighborhoods continue to occupy a special place in our hearts.Thank you Dr. States and those who contributed to this fine work. we love this book.
What a surprise for me to see my first holy Communion picture on the front cover of this book. I was very blessed to grow up in a unique wonderful place like "Polish Hill". I am grateful to the author for creating in this book some of the wonderful traditions and lifestyles of the Polish people in Pittsburgh,during the 50s and 60s.I am quite sure also that I was the only child in that class with an Italian mother. The picture on my older brother's communion day, in front of our home on Brereton Ave.
I'm a close friend of the author's family and can say this is not just a history book. This is truly a product of love and tradition. Anyone who is interested in Pittsburgh or Polish heritage, this is a book worth reading. I've now purchased copies for friends and family. All who read it find a connection to it! Definitely worth the read.
