DK changed their travel guides, and for the worst. They are now printed on thin paper (not glossy and durable like before), the typeface is fuzzy (not crisp like before), and the cover and binding are weak (not steong and durable like before). I always purchased DK for the beautiful glossy pictures — no more! The photos are now dull and washed out. And making it worse... the paper and printing has a terrible chemical smell. Seriously, what were they thinking? Yes, the books are lighter weight but at the expense of a tremendous drop in quality. I’m so disappointed and am returning both the Berlin and Amsterdam that I just purchased. I’ll do my best to find the old versions, even if they are used.
I was a travel agent for 23 years - in my late, lamented youth - and prepared many European trips for clients. I wish then that I had had a book like "DK Eyewitness Berlin" to work with. These books, which come out yearly, are the best, most complete siteseeing guides produced today. They are mostly siteseeing because while they give a few suggestions for restaurants and hotels, the books' publishers realise that those things are covered by websites devoted to up-to-date info on dining and accommodations."DK Eyewitness Berlin, 2019" is the latest in the Berlin guide series. I think this year's book is a bit lighter than in previous editions. The front and back covers are thinner than before, and that makes a difference in carrying the book with you OR committing burn/slash on the book, cutting out the needed pages. That's what I was doing with the books when I travel.Now, as for the book itself. I go to Berlin every two or three years so I'm fairly familiar with the city and it's sites. The DK Eyewitness books cover the sites in great detail. They highlight small, out of the way museums and historic sites. The book is so detailed that a high school or college history professor could use the book in teaching the history of Berlin. By the way, the book is also available in Kindle.
I’ve been a long time fan of DK travel books in fact once upon a time I bought the 1997 version of this very same travel guide in preparation for my trip to Europe. The information is is concise and the photographs are beautiful and inspiring they made me want to be there. Despite all the pros I actually left that travel guide at home because back then DK guides were printed on beautiful, heavy paper that made them more art type books than utilizing travel guides. It was such a heavy brick that it’s quality worked against it.I see that in this updated version they have gone with a lighter paper which hurts the quality of the pictures a bit but cuts the size and weight of the book itself in half making it a truly useable travel guide to be taken along and not left behind. Some may not care for these changes but I don’t mind as now it can more easily serve it’s original purpose to be taken along on the trip.
Berlin is a wonderful city. There are some amazing museums and monuments, the people are lovely, and the night life is legendary.This DK guide is a great introduction to the city, though it is in inadequate. You would also need to find more specific information about hotels and restaurants, but few guides re more generous with color photographs and beautiful scenes.The reader is given a brief history, a characterization of various areas of the city, and proposed itineraries for 5 hours, 1 day or two days, art lovers, families, foodies, shoppers or music lovers. There are numerous maps and photos, with a few suggestions for shops, restaurants and hotels. You will also find bare bones information about transportation, an index, three-page phrase section, a subway map and a pull-out map.
The "DK Eyewitness Travel Guide Berlin: 2019" does a fairly good job of showing you what there is to see and do in Berlin. There is a good section at the beginning on background information. The guide then divides the city into nine sections. There is a wealth of information on museums and landmarks, and also places to eat and hotels. The relative cost of the eateries is indicated, but I would like to have seen the admission costs for the museums.I did live and work in Germany for over one year, but I have not visited Berlin. I found that beer is an important ingredient in German culture. Although the guide has two pages on beer, there is no mention of the Reinheitsgebot. It seemed almost every day that I was in Germany, someone would mention the Reinheitsgebot to me. According to the Wikipedia, "The Reinheitsgebot, literally "purity order", sometimes called the "German Beer Purity Law" in English, is a series of regulations limiting the ingredients in beer in Germany and the states of the former Holy Roman Empire. The best-known version of the law was adopted in Bavaria in 1516." They do not add chemicals, e.g., artificial flavors, colors, or surfactants, to their beer.If I do get to visit Berlin on a future trip to Germany, I will take this guide with me, but I will certainly consult others.
