About the Author
RICHARD A. WOLTERS was a leader in applying the scientific discoveries of animal behaviorists to dog training. His books on training—Game Dog, Water Dog, Gun Dog, Family Dog, and Home Dog—are recognized as classics in their fields. His historical book, The Labrador Retriever: The History...The People, was chosen as Best Dog Book of the Year by the Dog Writers Association of America. In 1984 the DWAA honored Mr. Wolters as both Writer of the Year for Game Dog and Columnist of the Year for his popular column “Gun Dog” in Gun Dog magazine. Well-known for his lectures and seminars on retriever training, Mr. Wolters also was a president of the Westchester, New York, Retriever Club, as well as a vice president and director of the North American Hunting Retriever Association, which he was influential in founding.A veritable Renaissance man, Mr. Wolters worked as an atomic scientist, fine-arts teacher, photographer, and as picture editor at Sports Illustrated. His sporting interests included hunting, angling, bobsledding, ballooning, and soaring in sailplanes, in which he held the highest rating.

This is a great book. Firstly, I love the author. Secondly, I don't plan on hunting with my dog. I got this because I have found that a retriever is happiest if he or she is put to use. So, even if you don't actually hunt teaching your dog to hunt is a great way to make a good dog, and have a good solid relationship with your dog.Richard Wolters writes simple concise easy to read and follow instructions for training your retriever.**Disclaimer, this book was written in the 60's. Some of his methods are outdated, ie. a little rough. You can just ignore that part. Everything else holds true.
First let me say, I'm a first time dog trainer and I'm not teaching my dog(Australian Shepard Lab mix) to hunt birds necessarily, but using as obedience training tool. I was so impressed with the character and demeanor of my brother in law's Black Lab, and he said he used "Water Dog", so I figured, that since this was the next book in the series(and my dog is training to hunt truffles), why not give it a try?My dog is now about 4 months old and he does pretty well at the following (on whistle, voice or hand signals): sit and stay , come, walk on a leash, fetch(no signals); he is progressing nicely.After I'm sure he is solid in the aforementioned commands, I'll use some of the techniques in this book to teach him to search and mark(for truffles).
Great book, spot on information. I have used the book Water Dog before with great success but lent or lost it. Game Dog is essentially the same book with more upland training information. Great price on a used book. Arrived in excellent condition. Slight wrinkle in dust cover but no marks on cover or pages. I am very satisfied.
Great retriever training book! I use this book as my training bible, and Richard Wolters is the Einstein of dog trainers, and Billy will back me up on that! Even if you don't want to train a dog to hunt, it would be a great read, as his ideas and methods are great for general obedience on teaching a dog to sit, stay, come, and general obedience and socialization. You will be able to teach your dog to be great retriever and upland dog. I've trained 3 Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, using this book, and none better that I've ever read!
Had to by another copy ( probably the 5th I have owned... because am always end up giving it away.. to new dog owners, who want their dog to be as well mannered, and disciplined as mine.Have trained 6 Labradors using Wothers methods over the years... since I was 8 years old... Starting on my 7th. Chocolate Male. Off to a great start.
I had to read this for my high school class. It was a good book and would recommend it to anyone.We had a semester on dog training for Ag. We trained dogs for hunting, man hunts and service dogs. This book was to help us understand the dog and how to train it.
Richard Wolters is considered by many to be the leading authority on retriever training. I really benefited from this book, and I believe his methods are sound.My advice is to read this book BEFORE getting your puppy if possible... and if it's too late for that, get the book as quickly as possible because the first few weeks after you bring puppy home are critical to your training program.Wolters methods are gentle, easy, and have been very effective on my German Shorthair Pointer. His books are well written and easy to understand.
I was so impressed with water dog, I got this one too. He’s a great teacher and a incredible writer. Very funny stories to illustrate a point or lesson. Never imagined I would point left and right and my dog would go that way.
