I strongly recommend this book to those with a serious interest in the topic. My father was a WWII US Army POW at Stalag IIB for nearly two years, thus I have a strong interest in this book and others in the series. Continuing my extensive research in his experiences, I obtained "My Return Home" (English version) after reading the first volume in the series, and just completed the 143 pages in two evenings. This is a large-format hardcover book, about 9-1/2" wide and just under 13" in height. While it is in the style of a comic book, there is a substantial amount of well-written text providing insight on the specific trials endured and on the larger context of the war. The English version reads fluently. Three large rectangular graphic panels are printed on each page with embedded text in dialog balloons, and because of the large page size these are easy to see and read and provide good detail. The well-drawn imagery portrays events in a manner that allows the immersion of the reader in the scene to really get a feel for what it was like then. Most all scenes are in levels of gray, black and white, but the rare addition of a little color vividly highlights key points. The dreary gray color matches the mood of the men enduring years of captivity, starvation and brutality. The tale consists of a continuing discussion between Rene and his son covering the period of the march (many others refer to this as the Death March since so many perished en route) from Stalag IIB at Hammerstein (now Czarne, Poland) to the arms of Rene's wife in France. Exact dates, locations, and distances walked are stated, based on Rene Tardi's handwritten notes recorded during the journey, and other comments written for his son later. Copies of some actual journal entries are included inside the front and back covers. Considerable additional research was clearly performed to provided exact details about the activities and places. This is not a "glossed over" story. It contains a full account of the terrible ordeal, and clearly portrays the harsh realities of war without leaving unpleasant aspects unsaid. Viewing the graphic scenes emphasizes the points made in the text commentary, so while not typical of such POW war records of soldiers, the combination of art with text does multiply the impact compared to only reading a text account. The book includes a large two-page map of the full route, as well as a list of all places traversed. Both Polish and German town names are provided where applicable. The book concludes with several pages of standard text (no drawn graphics here) by Tardi and by Dominique Grange. A number of black and white photos illustrate this portion. The work concludes with a couple pages titled "Stalag IIB Glossary" containing expanded commentary referenced to places in the main section. There is no index or bibliography. This book would make a good addition to a reference shelf, and for younger generations it would especially provide a visual introduction to the chaotic concluding events in the WWII European Theater when bad things often happened to good people, and the ravages of full-scale war devastated the land. I look forward to obtaining Volume 3 covering the period after the war when the translation to English is completed.
