This book is a must read for understanding the social and political forces that are at play this election season.
A good primer for those interested in the result of the 2016 presidential election. However, those who seek answers to Hannah Arendt's thesis on politicking and the Oxford Dictionary's definition of the glossary, "post-truth," this primer would be of little help. Nonetheless, chapters one and nine had better not be skimmed over.
Two things about me: 1) I love politics, pop culture, and the politics of pop culture and 2) I was a sociology and ethnic studies double major in my undergraduate studies. It has been a few years since I have read a book like “Man Enough?†and boy, was I craving it.This book comes at a perfect time with the 2016 presidential election in full swing. Jackson Katz, whom I’ve always been a fan of, does a great job of looking at US presidential elections and how masculinity, or perceived masculinity, effects the outcome. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND. I have already started to better analyze the media surrounding the election.
I haven't read it yet, but just bought it after listening to Katz Jackson on public radio 90.7 KPFK, a radio channel that I trust very much. Katz articulated so well this gender layer of politics, which is so relevant to our current election and state of polarization. Thank you Jackson Katz! I can't wait to read.
This book basically employs the Freudian principle of projection. Katz claims that Republicans and especially Republican men are obsessed with the issue of masculinity in politics. But it is apparent that Katz is more obsessed with it than anybody else.What's really going on is that Republicans are mainly concerned with issues such as law and order at home as well as national security abroad. They therefore support politicians who support these issues but don't really care if the politician is a man or woman. If a politician like Margaret Thatcher had surfaced in American politics, she could have been elected president long ago. But it is more often that men support these positions so they are more likely to get Republican support.Nevertheless, this book is a good review of just about every election since 1968 as Katz describes the positions of both sides. Moreover, his gender based descriptions provide insight into some elections such as 1992 when Clinton beat Bush. Bush was the wimpier candidate and many Republicans abandoned him for the more decisive Perot. Likewise in 2012 Obama was able to beat Romney who came across as a wimpy flip flopper while Obama did a better job of having the courage of his convictions.
Admit, I have not read the book. YET, I read the ~Kirkus Review and I'm very impressed with the concept, comparison. Will be ordering this one.
