Because I'm a dog lover, I could not resist buying this book. Ok, I bought it because I loved the title and the picture of the dog. But it was a good purchase. I loved the author's humor as she worked with her father to train her very spoiled Labrador retriever, Seamus, to enter a kennel club retrieving contest. The author also writes of her mother's illness and death and how she and her father worked through the grieving process while they worked toward the goal of training Seamus.
Excellent story. I have never laughed so much out loud while reading a book. I can relate to the loss of a parent and how emotional it is taking care of them. I commend you. The bond you developed with your dad is priceless, I agree, I think your mom intervened. I can also relate to trips to emergency vet, as my Doberman used to eat things left and right, at age five still loves dish clothes. I recommend this book to everyone I talk to. I grew up in Wisconsin, don't miss the cold, but do miss ice skating and drinking a hot chocolate and love reading a great book. I your next one is in the works.

This book is warm, funny, and a joy to read. Mel Miskimen is wonderful comedic timing and phrasing. On many occasions, I recognized those situations and moments in my own life. I sincerely hope that Mel will keep writing books and publishing them. I don't believe I have seen a humorist this relatable since Erma Bombeck. I am buying many copies to give as Christmas gifts.
Funny, tearjerking got to love your family moments. Coping with loss and an energetic Lab make for an entertaining read you won't want to put down
The story of how Mel and her somewhat gruff and no-nonsense retired cop dad coped with their grief on the death of her mother with the help of Seamus, her goofy lovable lab, will have you laughing and crying. I hope we will have more books from her.
I know a good book when it makes me cry every couple of chapters. Mel is a fantastic writer, tugging on heartstrings (and dog collars!). I read this book shortly after moving away from Wisconsin, and it made me nostalgic for the wintery, green-and-gold state. A fast, entertaining read I could not put down!
Very funny, easy to read and entertaining. Actually laughed out loud numerous times! Her writing style is so relate-able (is that a word?)
