An interesting history of the American Prophet Joseph Smith by his mother. A informative read. I think most people would enjoy it.
This is my favorite of the various versions of Lucy Mack's history, because of the comments by Susan Easton Black. She delves into the background of the times and reveals truths that make Joseph more believable and revered. When I read church history, I like to read the actual words of the people who lived it. Lucy Mack gives a wonderful narrative. Susan Easton Black gives the proper historical perspective. Top it off with the beautifully designed pages and artwork of Liz Lemon Swindle and you have a real keepsake.
I found the story compelling. How much suffering the Smith family went through and still remain faithful was amazing to me. This history is a must read to understand the divinity of the man who restored God's church to the earth. I gained new respect for the whole Smith family.
I enjoyed reading history from a mother's point of view. I became involved in the trials and torments suffered by the whole family. And, I asked myself the question, how would I have responded to all the hatred and held on to hope?
There was so much personal knowledge shared by Lucy Mack Smith, her great faith and courage that helped to strengthen my faith. For me as a mother, this reading was a cause for anguish because of the sufferings of not only the men but even greater the suffering of the women and children from the beatings and abuse inflicted upon them. Most all could have been avoided if not for the turmoil from within the Church that came from those who defected. From the challenges of these early Saints came great spiritual joy and faith. They now have their great reward and the abusers their just rewards as well. Excellent reading.
I know Lucy Mack Smith speaks the truth of the joy, sorrow, & trials of bringing forth Christs Church in very difficult circumstances. This knowledge has come by study, prayer, faith & experience over 75 years. My advice is to read with an open mind & in sincere prayer asking God if this story is true.
This book gave me a much greater appreciation for the sacrifice, total commitment, faith and courage of the Prophet Joseph Smith, his family and so many of the early Saints of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.I am changed in solemn gratitude and increased commitment to live more courageously in defense of truth and righteousness. It also gives me a much deeper gratitude and appreciation for the restored Gospel and the Book of Mormon because so many sacrificed all to bring this book to us, and to restore the Lord's kingdom again on the earth. I'm very glad I read this history, and have felt my testimony of the truth of this work greatly strengthened as a result.
Filled with many amazing truths about the life of the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. from the mouth of his mother, Lucy in clear remembrance from hisyoungest days to the untimely end 38 years later. Many details of the experiences concerning the translation of the "Book of Mormon" from the original source, the metallic pages or plates of gold, combined with the testimonies of the men who saw and touched these sources was fascinating. Reading the words of one who was present throughout Joseph's life was enlightening and rewarding to me.
I enjoyed this book very much. I learned things I had not known and could not put it down until I had read it all. Highly recommend it with the caveat that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) will appreciate it more than the general public. I am strongly recommending it to my friends.
