I'll give you the bottom line up front: This is the best wrestling book ever written. If you're a fan at all, go buy it."Nitro" tells in great detail the story of WCW's rise to the top of the wrestling world in the mid-late 90s and their even more amazing crash and burn in 2000/01. Fueled by an amazing cast of stars, an innovative TV program (the "Nitro" from which the book gets its name), and tremendous storylines, WCW rose to amazing heights in in 1995-98. Their rise challenged the WWF to be better and wrestling fans, as a result of "The Monday Night Wars" were thrilled to multiple high-quality shows every week."Nitro" tells this story through the eyes of the people who were there. With over 120 exclusive interviews, Guy Evans paints a wonderfully detailed, complete picture of WCW - the wrestling itself, the TV show, the Turner network, and so on. We hear from Eric Bischoff, Kevin Nash, Kevin Sullivan and a whole host of production and behind-the-scenes folks. The focus here is on the big picture, not always the details of matches and what's actually going on in the ring for WCW. This is both good and bad. Occasionally, it feels like the wrestling gets short shrift but...that's what WCW did, too. They made the wrestling of secondary importance and lost their audience as a result. The plus side is that we get a lot more of the "other" details in WCW and that's where the fun stuff is - the backstage maneuvering, politicking, and dumb decision-making."Nitro" is 560+ pages of amazing. It flies by and you'll be left wanting for more. It's packed with details and tidbits that you probably didn't know going in and it's told in an easy, fast moving style.HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended. I've read dozens of wrestling books and this one is tops among the crowd. It's fabulous.p.s As for the cover...Guy Evans did himself no favors. Using a blurry, poor quality photo of a wrestling move that's not even from the "Nitro" show - bad idea. Using a lame white block font for the title - bad idea. Not putting his own name on the cover - really bad idea. But don't judge this book by its cover!

This is an amazing book that would not have been possible to write just a few years ago. A publisher would have been scared away by a 550+ page book on the subject matter. This is obviously a passion project of the author, conducting over 120 interviews and extensive research. If you loved Death of WCW, this book is even more comprehensive.

There have been a great many books written about wrestling since Mick Foley first wrote Have A Nice Day in 1999, a few of them detailing the meteoric rise and equally impactful fall of World Championship Wrestling but none have done it in such detail as Nitro. Starting with the hiring of Eric Bischoff in 1993 going all the way to the last Nitro in 2001, Guy Evans writes on the highs and lows of WCW using interviews with WCW executives and wrestlers, Turner/TBS/TNT executives and management, as well as other pertinent individuals to give the reader a ground-level view not seen before. I am a huge fan of The Death of WCW; however, one would never mistake it for a work of pure impartiality. While The Death of WCW focuses entirely on the negatives that WCW produced with a major focus on humor, Nitro instead looks at the daily dealings of running a wrestling business in a corporate network structure with an aim on impartiality. Evans often juxtaposes interviews to show how an event might have looked for a wrestler on the payroll versus someone in the Turner corporate offices, which leaves the reader to sort out with might be the truth for an incident rather than telling you his own beliefs. Ultimately, Nitro has an eye for impartiality and detail that few if any other wrestling books care to delve into and does so without the need to inflate any egos or tear down any individuals. If you are interested in modern professional wrestling, especially the business side and doubly so for World Championship Wrestling, you owe it to yourself to pick up Nitro.

Like many wrestling fans, I have fond memories of the later 1990s. For me, WCW Monday Nitro was must-see TV, and I have missed watching since the program was cancelled in 2001. Other books have told the story of World Championship Wrestling and Nitro from the wrestlers’ perspective. Guy Evans took a very different take by looking at the Nitro story with a more corporate view. Evans interviewed wrestlers, WCW management, and members of the Turner Broadcasting hierarchy to put together a comprehensive account of how WCW and Monday Nitro grew and ultimate collapsed. The reader learns about the business side of WCW, the turf battles involved with getting wrestling promoted within Turner, and the forces both inside and outside of the company that led to its’ ultimate demise. I feel that Evans tells the story from a neutral standpoint, letting the reader decide what really happened to make WCW great...and then make it fail. If you are a fan of wrestling history and the inner workings of the wrestling business I think you will really enjoy this book.

I’m not going to even begin to tell you how great this book is. I read it as I’m on the way to work and while I was chilling on the beach and it’s one of those books you can’t put down. While im not complete with it yet,so far it’s the most thorough accounting of the in’s & out’s of a wrestling company that for some reason doesn’t get its just due. Eric Bischoff would be a great choice to lead a wrestling company today because he’s done it before and has learned a lot about what not to do and what needs to be done. A wrestling fan is going to enjoy this book tremendously
