I thoroughly enjoyed this creative book which combines the stories of young inventors with templates and prompts to encourage young readers to actively involve themselves with stem activities. First, the author discusses how people invent things and then presents a worksheet that outlines the steps in the process: ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve.Mukherjee chooses young inventors who succeeded as inventors. Becky Schroeder invented paper that glows in the dark. Param Jaggi came up with a device that cleans the exhaust from automobiles. Izzah and Miki are two young ladies who invented an air freshener for cow manure. Other inventors gave us the popsicle, television, a surfboard with a sail, bubble gum, and ear muffs.These templates and worksheets can be printed out and hung up. Readers are urged to use their brains and creativity to come up with their own ideas and inventions. They are encouraged to join the WizKids Club. While this book is aimed at readers ages six through ten, I consider it a valuable resource for children of any age. Even budding adult inventors can use the templates to spur their imaginations.

I highly recommend this outstanding book for children to create and develop their creative and imaginative side.

Famous STEM Inventors by Sumita Mukherjee is a great book for children, both those with an interest in science and those who need a little push in that direction. Complete with illustrations, definitions, and activities, this book will capture and keep just about any child’s attention. It’s the sort of the book that I would have loved to engage with as a child, without a doubt.Famous STEM Inventors tells the stories of nine young inventors and their processes for imagining their unusual inventions and, eventually, making them a reality. Each story includes definitions for larger words which young children may not know as well as an activity related to the story which encourages readers to plan their own inventions. Illustrations of the inventors and their inventions are also included.Children will love the fun facts and activities, and parents will love watching their children get their first real taste of the STEM world. One of the most unique features of this book is the diversity of the inventors. Not only are they different ages and from different times, but they are also a nice mixture of male and female and include a variety of races and ethnicities. I think it’s rather discouraging for children who are not Caucasian, male, or both when they only see Caucasian males represented in books like these, so I appreciate Mukherjee including a more diverse sample. In fact, I hope that she’ll come out with more books like these that cover STEM inventors of even more diverse backgrounds, considering she’s done so well here.The only point I have that comes even close to being an issue with this book is the fact that multiple styles of drawing are used for the illustrations, not just one used throughout the entire book. However, this is only close to being an issue, not an actual issue. I feel that the different drawing styles match the inventors and inventions of the corresponding stories. The varying styles are not distracting—in fact, it was only upon reading the book for a second time I even noticed—and so the variation certainly doesn’t take anything away from the book.Overall, I think that children and parents both will love this book, and I highly recommend parents to get it for their children. Whether they read it together or parents let their children have at it by themselves so that their imaginations can run wild, parents and children will be talking about this book for days—if not weeks—to come, and I’m sure that it will change a few lives along the way.

All kids dream of inventing things. These true stories about young inventors are not only educational, but together with the prompts, will also inspire kids to create their own inventions and have lots of fun doing so! One of my favourites was the cow poop freshener which will certainly appeal to kid’s funny bones and the activity here encourages kids to create something useful from waste.

There are pages to sketch their inventions and learn about how to develop their creations. This is a fun way to introduce STEM to your child. You may even learn something yourself.

As STEM becomes has an increasing demand for workforce, this book- I passionately felt- was perfect for encouraging young children early on that there are more career options: like STEM. I found it beautifully illustrated and my children adored the invention stories enough to warrant three readings in one night. My daughter has set her heart on inventing something new every day. A wonderful book for parent and child; I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
